Hangzhou Weekly - a city memo Tuesday, July 01, 2008 10:11 AM

This 16-page Hangzhou Weekly commemorates the 100th issue of the publication, which falls on June 30, 2008.  As the only weekly source for detailed local information in English, the newspaper was born to be a ‘narrator’ of the city of Hangzhou.  It endeavors to provide the Hangzhou’s expat community with something to read in a foreign language and get a feel for the city in which they are living. The newspaper is now over two years old and is still quite young; but it continues to serve as an important indicator of the enrichment and upgrading of the city’s media power and testifies to the determination of the city of Hangzhou to be more involved in modernization and globalization...

Get April Fooled Again Wednesday, April 16, 2008 11:18 AM
"Hey there's a bug on your shoulder!"
I turned round and round trying to find the bug on me.
"April Fools!!!"
That April Fools joke was played on me by my youngest daughter when she about six years old. She spun around in circles, laughing hysterically as she tumbled onto our freshly sprouted lawn. The sound of her laughter mixed with the songbirds’ mating calls overhead. The magical practical joke liberated my spirit and for a brilliant shining moment we stood on a sparkling fleck of paradise on earth.

Spring has sprung a leak
And now plays hide and seek
With dead winter’s snow.

I wrote those lines in college when a poet's heart took root one grand spring morning. In the springtime, flower buds burst through their winter jackets just as naturally as children outgrow their shoes. Our seedling progeny slumber under our protection. Their little limbs must grow stronger before they can enter the world and begin to blossom on their own. We nurture and cajole them, guide them and at last must let them stand alone.

The child matures to a young adult and enters college. We proud parents stand and admire the straightness of their limbs and freshness of their ideas. The time we share is portioned out over holidays and school breaks. We want to embrace our returning children, gather them up in our arms and sing lullabies to them as if they were still children. In our eyes, they must know, they will always be that precious package that grew up too fast. Perhaps it is nature’s April Fools on us that we see the child within the adult and must admit time has passed and we grow older still.

This April Fools Day the flowers have awakened and spread their petals to the life giving sunshine. All around me the tender green leaves have appeared as if by magic. The warm evenings call to us to stroll down the ancient lanes of Hangzhou, this “paradise on earth”. The springtime brings with it a giddy appreciation for the little moments: a cherry blossom jostled by the breeze at sunset; a bright green leaf of a tree regenerated after a snowy winter; and for the invigorating laughter of children as they run and play. Spring has come once again and life begins anew. In the recollection of giggles from my happy prankster-child, I am bloom inside. Go out into the ephemeral springtime before it fades into memory.

Stop and Smell the Roses Thursday, March 06, 2008 3:48 PM
Well, the Spring Festival is officially over. During the holiday, I spent a great deal of time photographing the record breaking snows we had in Hangzhou and across Zhejiang. The blanket of white added a layer of magic to the West Lake area in particular. Being from the American Midwest, the depth of snow was not all that astonishing, but to have that much snowfall here in Hangzhou was remarkable. I was especially happy to see the imaginative snowmen that sprouted all over town.

Now we are back at work on the next issue of the magazine. Spring is beginning to blossom, and with the warm weather our thoughts turn to the outdoors. This will be my first spring in Hangzhou and after the surprising winter, I am looking forward to Nature’s colorful palette being on full display around Zhejiang.

Take it easy and stop to smell the roses.

The newest issue Thursday, January 24, 2008 4:09 PM

Well, Another Intouch issue is about to be wrapped up. This will be a special issue as we are about to celebrate the Spring Festival. We have tried our best to put together a well-rounded issue with some entertaining and thought-provoking articles. It was my great pleasure to introduce the great Pan Tianshou to you, our readers. And I had some howling good fun explaining the calculations of the Lunar New Year.

Being from the American Midwest, I am enjoying the blasts of freezing air. While I write this, I am listening to one of my favorite Blues songs “Sweet Home Chicago”, by the great bluesman Robert Johnson, and remembering the icy sidewalks along Michigan Avenue. But back home in the Windy City of Chicago, the wintry gusts off Lake Michigan froze my buns off much more thoroughly than the winter winds off the West Lake, so for that I am thankful.

Intouch Yiwu - a sea of commodities and a paradise for buyers Sunday, January 20, 2008 11:19 PM

Last week, I went to Yiwu – the biggest small commodities market, for an interview with the general manager of Starbucks.

Upon the time when I got off the train at Yiwu, I merely took the city as a quite ordinary county-level city – disordered and chaotic. Afterwards, we took a taxi to Futian market – the largest market in Yiwu. When I reached the market, I was totally shocked. Miscellaneous goods are on the shelf awaiting for buyers, and a very important point is that all the goods are extraordinarily cheap at a wholesale price. It seems that you can make a fortune by selling purchased by bulk from Yiwu. Haha.

It is said that Yiwu boasts an aggregate market floor area of 2.6 million square meters with 53,000 booths and 200,000 persons engaging in business. The market gathers 320,000 varieties of goods of 1,502 categories from 34 trades (there are 500,000 varieties of goods in the world as released by UN). Ha, really a magical place, right'

Tips for you if you want to go there by train:

1.       Train travel costs you nearly one hour and a half.

2.       Price of train ticket – around 20 yuan.

Happy New Year Friday, January 11, 2008 3:45 PM

As an editor of Intouch and the Hangzhou Weekly it is my privilege to work with some extraordinarily talented people. Being an editor gives me insight into the panoply of human events that occur in Hangzhou and Zhejiang. As a writer, comprehension of these events is my bread and butter, and I try to use my instincts to smooth out the rough nuances of language between Chinese and English.

I will try to post regularly to the editor’s blog.

The creative process for each issue is energetic to say the least. We try to deliver a high quality magazine with relevant well-constructed topics, and reader feedback is critical to success. We need you to critique our publications and this website. Send us your thoughts. Don’t procrastinate. Thanks and keep reading.
